Aim of Qualification: Graduates of this qualification will possess the skills and knowledge to provide care and support for consumers in a health or disability setting. The compulsory section of the qualification includes skills and knowledge relating to recognising abuse, contributing within a team, behaving professionally, consumers’ rights and responsibilities, supporting a person’s quality of life, maintaining a safe environment, culturally safe operating principles, self-advocacy, risk management planning, ethical responsibility and the role of the support worker. As a recognised national qualification, it leads on from the National Certificate in Community Support Services (Foundation Skills) (Level 2) and on to any of the National Certificates in Community Support at Levels 3 and 4. These include the National Certificate in Community Support Services (Residential) (Level 3), the National Certificate in Community Support Services (Human Services) (Level 3), the National Certificate in Community Support Services (Intellectual Disability) (Level 3), the National Certificate in Community Support Services (Disability Information Provision) (Level 4) and the National Certificate in Diversional Therapy (Level 4). Assessment: The following types of assessment will be used on the National Certificate in Community Support Services (Core Competencies) (Level 3) course: • Knowledge –based assessment . Following on from the written exercises in the student workbooks which test knowledge areas for each unit standard, students are also tested orally on this knowledge in their workplace settings. • Practical skills assessment will be used in all on-the-job facilities to assess caregiving skills (what care staff provide in a practical situation). Formative assessment Formative assessments within the classroom will be conducted orally and take the form of question and answer reviews of key concepts and class brainstorming. Students will also receive formative written feedback on the written exercises they complete in their workbooks. This feedback is recorded in the Career Force Workplace Assessment Portfolio. Summative assessment Summative assessments will be used for both the theoretical components and the practical skills components of the course. AIL will use CSSITO (Career Force) pre-moderated assessment tasks and marking schedules which have been developed for all the unit standards which make up the course. AIL assessors will complete the checklist in the Trainee Assessment Portfolio to assess the knowledge and skills of the each unit standard. All assessment is competency based.
